I don't know why she ignores me. She walks past averting her eyes as if looking at me will damn her. She hurries her steps, fearing perhaps something might jump off of me and on to her. Why won't she look at me? Please, even a glance, just to acknowledge one living creature to another.
I do the things I'm supposed to do. I make no sound when others of her kind make that bell ring, even though the noise of it hurts. I patiently allow her to eat first, not looking at her. Even knowing that she's watching me then, I cannot, will not meet her gaze, or bear that look of distrust, wary that I will snatch from her whatever she's eating.
